She Really Isn't Faint Hearted

When I first started blogging several years ago, I did so for two reasons. First, I needed to write. The other reason to blog was a political life line. Where we live, liberals are in short supply and I needed to express myself politically.

I was surprised, then, when I pretty much lost my mojo for political writing. I still have plenty of opinions, most of which are ranted and raved as I stand half-naked in the bathroom each morning. My ravings and finger-pointing opinions are usually my flurried response to something I've heard on NPR. MathMan is my audience and I know that he's only half listening because he is very easily distracted by things like half-naked women. That's okay. I've learned to accept my limitations as a pundit and to play to my strengths.

And so, my blog has evolved to what you see today. I've been thinking about not blogging any more because something is going to have to give. Instead of stopping altogether, I'm going to stick with this scaled back version, posting two to three times a week and doing my best to offer quality over quantity.

One of the reasons why I can't give up blogging completely is because the most welcome aspect of blogging is the friendship I've found among you. I've had the pleasure over the years to meet several of my fellow bloggers. Last night, I added another notch to my metaphorical bedpost by hanging out with B., otherwise known here in comments as Notfainthearted. She's here for an educational function and we got together last night for dinner and drinks and lots of words.

Last year, when MathMan and I were going through our really rough times, B. offered many words of support and wisdom based on her experience. I was touched then by her unflagging and upbeat attitude, even under her own frustrating circumstances. I always felt like she really understood what was going on here, even though we'd never met in person.

Last night confirmed that.

I walk away from such a meeting and I'm floored that what started out as my way of yelling into the darkness about politics has given me the chance to know so many interesting, intelligent and multi-talented people.

And you know, I can't help but think that last night, I made a friend for life.

P.S. Now that I've told you I'm sticking with less posts, I'll be posting a small avalanche of things. I've got post build up and I need to thank a couple of people for their kindnesses. I know, it's the blogger's curse - announce you're slowing down and boom! you're all bloggity-blog-blog.

P.S.S. I keep hearing this song and so I'm punishing you with it, too.

Because I love you that much, that's why.

  2. I LOVE Not Fainthearted!

When I confessed to missing my uncle's accordion playing during the holidays, she emailed me links of HER playing the same music.

It made my homesickness so much easier to deal with.

I'm glad you were able to meet her. I'm not at all surprised that you're kindred spirits.

  3. I am glad you got to meet not fainthearted. As far as your morning rants and as unlikely as it seems I actually listen between the ogling, you know am very subdued in the AM.

  4. Lisa, You could never stop writing/blogging, it is in your blood...lol But if you need to slow down..I can understand that.. sometimes we all need to just back off and take stock of our lives and see what is what.

We would all be worse off if you did stop blogging and writing because of your humor, your style and your sharing of your heart and soul. But, you do what you have to do that is best for you and your family. That's the main thing, we will survive, but you must too.

Know we love you and love to read what you write..but YOU are the most important..your words are secondary.

  5. I'm with Sherry on this. Blogging IS WRITING! Now I will follow Not Fainthearted home and blog roll her. I've been told it's relatively painless.

  6. Sure. Try to quit. Really, really try. 's not gonna happen. The BlogPeople have you. You are pwned by them. You are no longer in control.

And if that doesn't work, I'm telling Mom.

  7. Oh, and I am glad you met Not Fainthearted and that you have created a bond ..These are the people who make us who and what we are, and help keep us sane. That's important.

  8. Oh, Lisa. I sure can relate. Sometimes I feel like going online is inviting an avalanche to fall on my head ... There's so much to read, and so many dynamite people like you to natter with ;-)

For example ... you wrote in your profile that you're "an enigma wrapped in bacon." I'm an enigma wrapped in cat hair.

The political writing ... I imagine that some folks (like myself) just got tuckered after the last election ... We were all OD'ing ... Now it seems to have returned (in part?) to business as usual ... or to "circus as usual" ...

    Hugs ...

  9. I've tried to walk away a couple times, and failed miserably at it. I understand the desire, but I also understand the resigned acceptance that it can't be done.

    MathMan ogles? How surprising.

  10. I'm with Sherry....please don't stop. I am having a hard enough time doing without the daily posts.

I know what you mean about living in a place where liberals are in short supply. I sometimes feel like such an outsider, but it just goes against everything logical to me to think like some of my co-workers, friends and relatives do. Some of the people that I work with will say to me when I make a "liberal" comment "Are you a democrat?" like they are shocked to hear it. I just respond, "I'm an American."

    Thanks Lisa.

  11. We love you too. I would miss you if you stopped writing, but I know that I have severely slowed down, so I can't blame you for your slow down. If you write once or twice a week that is more than me, although I keep saying I will write more. Maybe when i am back into more of a routine, I will get back to writing.

  12. Wise woman. Be well, keep writing the real stuff and post when you can. The world never stops but the friend part of it is happy to wait.

  13. Two things: wish it was me in that photo with you :)

And that song? Holy crap, it DEFINED my childhood....and it's tone makes my heart tug still, at 45. Love it...

Love you too; glad we've become friends on Skype and Blog, and wai for the day that it IS me in the photo with you...xxx

  14. sweetie, you can post as little or as much as you want and I will always be by to read what you have to say! ;)

I do agree that the most wonderful and completely unexpected benefit of blogging has been the friendships we make here doing it... we would have never met had it not been for this medium and, one of these days, it wouldn't surprise me to see you sitting in my living room with mathman!

  15. I lost my taste for political blogging too. 8 years of BushCo took it right out of me. But I also blog in order to write on a regular basis. You keep writing it, I'll keep reading it. Deal?

  16. Right now if cutting back is what you need to help create some balance in your life, that's certainly what you should do. I will miss it but will tune in every time you post something.

On another note remember if you want to chat about THINGS, I'd love to.

On another note, Lisa from Pretty but Shallow is coming to Atlanta next weekend and I'm trying to arrange for some Atlanta bloggers to get together. Let me know if you have time and are interested.

  17. I was going to say something about how your daily posts have been making some of the more sporadic posters jealous, but now you throw in a meet and greet and I must admit it is me who is jealous. Not that I don't want others to meet you, but that I want to meet you again.

  18. i cannot tell you how many times i have wanted to stop - because i wonder if anyone is listening/reading or actually cares.

but because i finally figured out that doing this a helluva a lot cheaper than standard therapy i slog on - so to speak.

like you, there are just too many fine people to read and respond- and i start to feel like a bad friend when i dont. and with a job that is now taking 14 hours a day (which i cannot write a stitch about - and you know why) it gets tough ---

but i know if i make one person smile or learn something new, then it is all worthwhile\

and more important, making friends like you is even better.

sorry i dont get to read you or anyone else more often - if i won lotto i would, but dont go away then again i have you on facebook

  19. We must do what is needed and slowing down blogging is better than giving it up.

Your wise and witty posts will be that much more interesting as they will be few and far between chica.

    Good luck on your journey.

I love you..but you know that right? ;)

  20. I enjoy your writing and of course hope you do much more, but writing should not be a burden. And you can comment at my place anytime!

There will always be stuff to write about.

Blog when you feel like it. A lot of blogs go through long fallow periods; some return, some don't.

Best of luck, whatever you do, and may you and your family stay healthy and happy!

  21. It's hard to slow down from blogging sometimes--but necessary, I feel. Still, we'll all miss your hilarious daily posts. :)

  22. Fran's comment made me realize I am probably only capable of being an enabler to you and your vices. I can make it so easy, baby. ;)

  23. I think it's harder for all of us who had been blogging about politics now that George Bush and his cohorts (Cheney in particular) are gone. Sure, we can get aggravated about stuff we find out after the fact, and we can complain about stuff Obama is or isn't doing that he said he would or wouldn't do, but let's face it, it's always easier to rant when you're the party on the outs. (See: Current GOP and Rush Limbaugh).

Plus with stuff happening in one's personal life on top of it (you had to move, there was a college search, a graduation, and so on) it's hard to get up the energy to be all political.

I know because this is what has happened to me. Like you, I would never give up blogging because I really feel as if we have a real community! I hope one day to be as lucky as you and meet the bloggers I read! There are some that would be very easy to arrange and others that are longer distance. Ironically the one blogger I have met was in Hawaii, on Maui!

  24. i am looking forward to when my car breaks down in your neck o the woods and I call and say "remember when you said if I ever needed something?" LOL

  26. What Sherry said!

I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't check in with you! I know that I would miss our friendship from the amazing blog-o-sphere, and you would be missed by many!

You always make me laugh as well as think--two wonderful things we all need in this life

    =)

  27. Sandy: [Danny is trying to make out with Sandy] No, Danny!
Danny: Sandy, don't worry about it, nobody's watching.
    Sandy: Danny, get off me!
Danny: Come on, Sandy, what's the matter with you? I thought I meant something to you!
Sandy: Meant something to you! You think I'm going to stay here with you in this? this sin wagon? You can take this piece of tin!
[throws his class ring at him and runs away]
Danny: Sandy, you just can't walk out of a drive-in!
