The Dance Mix of Life and Death

It is with great pride that MathMan and I celebrate the accomplishments of our daughter The Dancer today. Her high school graduation commencement exercises will be held this morning.

At MathMan's school, they will also be celebrating graduation, but the ceremony will be blurred around the edges with grief. One of the school's teachers was killed last night in an auto accident on the way to his bachelor party.

Somehow we humans are able to take it all and do with it what we must. We celebrate, we mourn. Our tissues are made to absorb the tears of sadness and pride.

And on and on and on......

This blog will return to its regularly scheduled foolishness soon........

  4. It will be a wonderful fun and sad day for you all, just dealing with the graduation of the Dancer. Fun because it is the culmination of all she has worked for so far, and sad because of the same. Fun because it is the beginning of the next stage of her life, sad because of the same.

And the exact same for you and MathMan.

I am sorry about the teacher at MathMan's school, that is going to be hard on all concerned. His students will find it hard to deal with as will his family and loved ones. It will temper the happiness for sure. And I am sure it will overshadow yours some.

As you said, we are able to deal with it all, and it is wonderful we can.

Have a happy day and enjoy what you can, celebrate this wonderful day with love.

  5. Congratulations to your family! One down, two to go.

Mathman HS seems to have experienced a lot of ups and downs this past year. I hope next school year will bring nothing but ups.

  11. I am sorry to hear about your friend's death. I hate it when life is so tragically poignant like that. Of course it happened today, on a day that is so bittersweet for you already. I am sure you are so proud of The Dancer, but I get weepy when my children get a perfect attendance certificate at school, and know what a mixed blessing it is to see them grow. You've done so well despite all your entertaining foibles, dear(s). (Thank goodness you have them, or you'd be so much better than us.)

  13. Not sure how to react. . .

Joy and celebration with you and your whole family, as well as grief for this young man's family, his fiancee, who has lost her love on the eve of her wedding, and your husband a colleague.

When it makes sense, let me know. Right now, I'm going to close the blinds and try to not think about it too much.

  14. My graduation ceremony happened shortly after Columbine, meaning that there were metal detectors, police officers, and bomb sniffing dogs there. Had a way of overshadowing the intended purpose.

  16. Congratulations. Such a beautiful and accomplished lady. Look how your benign neglect turned out! And the other two will be completely different and probably just as amazing.

This is the first thing I ever heard of the Weepies. And I'll never stop loving the album it's on.

  17. Oh man. Now that's a mix of emotions. Congratulations to your daughter. She's gorgeous, to boot. The groom-to-be, that's just doubly sad. As Braja reminds us, death is part of life, but we sure don't have to like it, especially when the timing couldn't be worse.

  18. Love to all of you.

And the perfect choice of a song to capture so many emotions. I love the Weepies. Grace sang one of their songs in her school talent show yesterday.

  25. Life is full of such surprises...both wonderful and terrible.

    Congrats and condolences.

By the way, I think you may be having the same problem with your blog opening as i was having with mine. Something to do with BLogger and the Followers widget. I removed mine, and all is now good again. Apparently, many people using Blogger are having the same problem.

  26. Joy and heartbreak so often walk hand in hand.

I'm happy for you to have raised such a lovely young woman and for her accomplishments. Saddened by MathMan's colleague, his family, his fiancé. How horrible. I read about it in the paper actually, but guess I didn't realize that's where MathMan worked.

Anyway, congratulations to the lovely Dancer and to you for raising a bright and beautiful daughter.
