Booked

Thank you all for your comments yesterday. I love finding out what you read. Right now I seem to be reading the dictionary. The further I go in this Michael Chabon book, the more I need it. When I'm finished with it, I think I'll move on to something with simpler language. All the sudden, I feel really, really stupid.

Not much time for any kind of writing today. We're driving Chloe back to her school. Break is over. Ahem.

Before I go, I should tell you that yesterday's workshop was full of great info about publishing and Lauretta spent some time talking to us about what keeps us from actually writing and how to remove those blocks. It was the boost I needed.

So here's the deal - I'm going to put myself on a schedule. I'm going to continue to blog, but only in the afternoon after I've done some work on my manuscript. That writing must come first. In fact, I'm going to keep myself offline altogether until 11am everyday. It will be like coming off a drug, I think, but it's time.

I heard today on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me about how the Chicago Public School's District HQ now has a shaming device on its computer system. If you log onto any of a list of verboten websites, this mad shrieking alarm goes off. It doesn't stop until you've closed the offending website's window. If this catches on, we all might consider investing in stocks of companies that produce hearing aids. I have to keep this info from MathMan as long as I can. I mean, he's already threatened to strip me of my USB thingy that connects me to our home network until the manuscript is ready to be submitted to agents. Something about being tired of hearing about it.....

I must show some self-discipline, I suppose.

Now I must go. Everyone is medicated and the car is packed with Chloe's things. Five Goldens in a car for a few hours? What could possibly go wrong?

P.S. The Pussies for Peace are decked out as Attack Cats. And they haven't been fed....so.....

  1. I am so excited to hear about your writing schedule. I cannot wait to hold your book in my hot little hands. I KNOW that one day I will be at your book signings. I am sure of it and I am not a person prone to certainty.

  2. I am on a writing schedule.... from nine to three daily.... resumes, cover letters.. applications. And a little on the barroom bathroom wall.

  3. A writing schedule is like a honey-do list. To be devoutly ignored. In my humble opinion. Glanced at as one channel surfs and walks to the refrigerator to eat that last slice of cheese in the wrapper.

  4. Good for you, Lisa. I can't seem to even get myself to write on my blog now, more than once or twice a week. You're inspiring to me. :)

  5. When I was in a writers group it amazed me that people were able to write always at the same time of day and for a specific amount of time. I write when I need to. I write almost everyday. But there are times I go blank. There are dry spells and bla days and when I force myself to write I write crap. But that's just me. And I'm very fortunate to have worked in an industry where I made very good money when I worked and money was never my motivator except to pay the bills and a bit more. Money doesn't motivate me the way it does for most people. I want to be published. I want to be read. I want so much, but money isn't a big part of it. Someone recently called me a spoiled rich girl who never had to work, a fake liberal who never struggled. I was shocked that anyone would perceive me that way.

Like LBR I have every confidence that I will hold a signed first edition of your book in my hands and read it greedily. You'll come to Salt Lake for a booksigning and I'll be the person you choose to have lunch with.

  8. I write every day, no matter how long it takes, until I hit 1-2,000 words/day (M-F)...unless I'm on a roll. In that case I just don't stop until I'm ready to stop. Those are THE MAGICAL WRITING ZONE DAYS. Sometimes I hit 7-10,000 words in a day. But those are rare and thoroughly draining.

For me, butt in chair, listen to the voices in my head and don't stop until I hit the goal mark for that day.

Then, I can bloggy surf/time suck my day away.

    Good luck!

  9. Just make sure the book's really good so after I get your autograph on a copy, I can sell it on Ebay.
